On Tuesday, November 5th, REEP Green Solutions celebrated 15 years by hosting a Community Actions Awards event. Members of the Waterloo Region presented awards to individuals and groups who made their workplace or home more sustainable.
What began as a pilot project at the University of Waterloo has transformed into an organization for water and energy sustainability. With their mission to ’empower the community of Waterloo Region with practical tools and knowledge to make sustainability the norm’ REEP celebrates the sustainability efforts of those in the community.
This is our way of saying thank you to the ordinary homeowners, teachers and organizations who are making our community more sustainable.

Kathleen Walsh of The Cora Group Inc. received the New Build award for creating a building that was sustainable and would attract tenants with an environmental philosophy. This building is located on 375 Hagey Boulevard, right in the heart of the David Johnston Research + Technology Park. The 100,000 square foot, energy, water and stormwater wise building is soon to receive its LEED gold certification.
All of the building’s rooftop water is captured in a 40,000 litre cistern that is used to flush toilets and irrigate their perennial beds. The property also features four bioswales that soak up and filter all of the runoff from the main parking lot. In order to further protect water quality they sweep their parking lot regularly and reduce their winter salt use by hiring a Smart About Salt accredited contractor.
