Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting the motor neurons that reach from the spinal cord to the brain. The degeneration of the motor neurons leads to a loss of muscle movement and causes paralysis.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge uses social media to create awareness of this disease. Individuals or groups are nominated to post a video of themselves pouring a bucket of ice water over their head, while nominating others. More information on ALS available here: www.alsa.org.
